Kia’s latest technical advancements will be taking the global market by storm. We’ve engineered our breakthrough eight-speed automatic transmission (8AT) for front wheel drive. Ready for debut in 2017, the advanced transmission offers superb mechanical efficiency and smooth gearshifts. Space always being a premium, the FWD 8AT has also been brilliantly designed to use the same space as a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission, and weigh 3.5 kg less…
Kia’s engineers have been working on this challenging, advanced transmission since 2012 and have patented 143 new technologies during the course of their work! These make for excellent performance, including smooth acceleration from standstill, greater fuel efficiency and more decisive acceleration at speed than an automatic transmission with fewer gears.
The 8AT also has the smallest oil pump of any production transmission in its class, and distributes oil incredibly efficiently. The number of control valves has been reduced from 20 to 12, and this results in quicker gear shifts, a more direct mechanical link to the engine and improved packaging.
The FWD 8AT debuts globally in the 2017 Kia Cadenza, on models powered by the 3.3 Litre V6 GDI engine. Later it will feature in other models and further development of transmissions is planned. It’s an exceptional product, testament to the engineering expertise of our development team and is set to attract enormous global interest.
