The Kia Niro has surpassed a significant milestone, reaching over 100,000 cumulative sales in the UK since the model’s original launch on 19 July 2016.
The Niro has been a consistent favourite in the UK, thanks to its compelling blend of size, economy and electrification – available from Shelly Motors with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrain. Pricing starts from £29,660 for the Niro Hybrid ‘2’, which benefits from an efficient 1.6-litre petrol hybrid engine powering the front wheels via a smooth shifting six-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Sitting on 16-inch alloy wheels, economy is up to 64.2mpg (WLTP Combined cycle), while CO2 emissions are rated at just 100g/km.
The first-generation Kia Niro originally went on sale as a full hybrid, offering high fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. It was Kia’s first dedicated car designed from the ground-up to accommodate electrified powertrains. In September 2017, the Niro Plug-in Hybrid joined the range – the first PHEV compact crossover to go on sale in the UK. It offered a potential fuel economy of well over 200mpg and an EV range of up to 36 miles (NEDC combined figures) and became a fleet favourite throughout its time on sale.
The all-electric e-Niro joined as the third member in the Niro family, making its European debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. On sale in the UK from 1 April 2019, the e-Niro went on to make a name for itself in the UK market and was the first ever electric car to be named What Car?’s ‘Car of the Year’ in 2019.
In July 2022, the second-generation Niro went on sale in the UK, once again available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full EV and featuring a radical redesign in-line with Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy. Met with immediate and great acclaim, the second-generation Niro contributed enormously towards Kia’s 2022 sales that saw almost 50 per cent of its UK customers step into an electrified model (EV, PHEV and HEV).
